The lunar lander called Odysseus or IM-1, created by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines, is barreling toward the moon. If it fails, Odysseus would become the third lunar lander to meet a fiery demise on the moon in less than a year. Russia’s first lunar lander mission in 47 years, Luna 25, failed in August 2023 when it crash-landed. Overall, more than half of all lunar landing attempts have ended in failure — tough odds for a feat humanity first pulled off nearly 60 years ago. The US remains the only country to have put humans on the lunar surface, most recently in 1972 with the Apollo 17 mission.

Shares of Intuitive Machines jumped for a third consecutive trading session, surpassing their post-SPAC debut price, as the company's first mission completed further milestones as it approached the moon. Intuitive Machines' stock surged as much as 65% in trading Tuesday to an intraday high of $12.05, north of the $10.03 a share price that shares traded at after the company completed its SPAC merger in February 2023. Since its inaugural moon mission launched last week, the company's share price has more than doubled. In a series of daily updates since Friday, the Texas-based lunar company said its cargo lander "continues to be in excellent health" and is preparing to enter the moon's orbit on Wednesday. The company noted that entering lunar orbit, also known as "lunar orbit insertion," will be the mission's "largest challenge to date."

TOKYO (AP) — An unmanned lunar spacecraft has captured and transmitted data analyzing 10 lunar rocks, a greater-than-expected achievement that could help provide clues about the origin of the moon, a Japan space agency official said Wednesday. A black-and-white photo transmitted soon after SLIM was reactivated showed the bumpy lunar surface, including six rocks. By comparing the mineral compositions of moon rocks and those of Earth, they could find out if the rocks have common elements, he said. SLIM carried two autonomous probes which were released just before touchdown, recording the landing, surroundings and other lunar data. The landing made Japan the world's fifth country to reach the moon, after the United States, the Soviet Union, China and India.

But moon landings are likely to become more common over the next few years. "The moon is a proving ground," said Michelle Hanlon, executive director at the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi. But, once we figure that out, the helium-3 on the moon could seriously power the Earth, the entire Earth, for centuries," Hanlon said. "But a second, newer part to this is the belief that there are significant resources on the moon that are useful to Earth, or useful for future space flight."
